Abstract
The focus of this study was on how people understand emotion expressed in a language that is not their native language and also whether there is a difference in the way male and females understand vocally expressed emotion. This experiment investigated the emotionally-neutral word “banana” as uttered with five different emotions: anger, sad, surprised, suspicious, and happy. 20American listeners,9Korean listeners, and20 Japanese listeners were asked to listen over headphones to the words and indicate which emotion they heard. The results show that the perception of emotion differed according to the native language of the listener as well as to whether the listener was male or female.
