Abstract
This paper summarizes some previous studies by this author in order to highlight the importance of intonation and voice quality to the understanding of utterance meaning. Specifically, it points out how cultural misunderstandings may take place because of the different sensitivities of different language speakers to pitch shape and voice quality changes, especially in conveying paralinguistic information such as admiration, suspicion, and sarcasm
