Abstract
Since 2002, many elementary schools have implemented English instruction as part of the Global Understanding Curriculum (Kokusai Rikai Kyoiku). However, while there are many teaching materials that try to get children to learn the cultures of various foreign countries, few of them purport to enable students to pass on both general and regional Japanese culture to foreigners. Considering this, the development of “Expressive Type” English teaching materials for elementary school children is needed, because true international understanding should be one of mutual understanding. Therefore, the main target of this thesis is to develop a model for “Expressive Type” teaching materials for elementary school children. We have especially tried to make teaching materials that (i) arouse the children's creativity, and (ii) are based on regional folklore.
