Abstract
This paper addresses ways to make highly motivational EFL lesson content which not only fosters global understanding, but is beneficial to learners in a variety of age groups and learning contexts. The notion of ‘global understanding’ itself can be used to guide syllabus design. As a concept, it guides us in finding ways to encourage understanding between Japan and other countries, as well as creating lessons that appeal to and motivate a broad sweep of Japanese learners.
