Abstract
This paper reports about an ongoing project that investigates the effect of limiting how often and when learners can consult their dictionaries to check the meaning of words and translate words from their L1 to the L2. Learners reported some difficulty or anxiety when they were not allowed to use their dictionaries, however many of them began to use communication strategies that enabled them to comprehend or get across a message. It is suggested that limiting when learners can consult their dictionaries not only creates a more natural speaking behavior, it increases opportunities for applying effective communication strategies.
