Abstract
This report explores some of the issues concerning the selection of appropriate instructional materials and methods in content- based instruction, or CBI, for a course in American history designed for EFL learners at a community college in Japan. In the discussion, relevant topics from studies which have been done on CBI will be used along with a description of the current status of an ongoing action research project. The report will examine the reasons for choosing Japanese language materials initially, then subsequently shifting to a CBI approach using a simplified target language text.
