Reading the Texts of Michel de Certeau and Paul de Man

Abstract

Rhetoricians have long thought highly ofmetaphor as a trope, while paying less attention to metonymy. This study deals with the possible function of metonymy especially in thinking patterns. We discuss this notion referring to the relation between ‘strategy and tactics’ corresponding to the concept of ‘place and space’ presented by Michel de Certeau. This theorist regards rhetoric as one of the most important ‘tactics’, particularly focusing on metaphor as rhetoric. In order to pursue the ‘deconstructive’ role of metonymy in a socially-constructed ‘place’, we critically discuss Certeau’s insight into the dynamic aspect of rhetoric in the field of ‘space’.
